Any fireplace worth having
is going to require some occasional maintenance and your wood heater or gas
log fire is no different. It is advisable to get all heaters and fireplaces
maintained or checked once a year prior to use by a qualified installer or
chimney sweep. If you’re in our area give
us a call or if you are in a more remote area and have to do it yourself,
there are a range of brushes and rods available (see ‘Paints & Cleaners’
in the ‘Accessories’ section). If you want to do it yourself,
remove the baffle plate (if possible) and check the bottom section of the
flue. Look for build up of soot and signs of deterioration such as rust and
ageing. If the bottom flue is OK the rest will probably be fine but replace
any flues that require attention.
Sweep the flue system by removing the hat and sweeping the soot down into
the firebox making sure the door is closed or the front of the fireplace is
sealed. After you clean up the deposits, check the firebox for rust or leaks
and the door seal for tightness - you may have to adjust the door latch to
tighten the seal. If you need to brighten up the paintwork, a full range of
